Passage 1
The train passed through a station and then it began suddenly to slow down, presumably in obedience to a signal. For some minutes it crawled along, then stopped; presently it began to move forward again. Another up-train passed then, though with less power than the first one. The train gathered speed again. At that moment another train, also on a down-line, turned inwards towards them, for a moment with almost alarming effect. For a time the two trains ran parallel, now one gaining a little, now the other. Mrs. McGill looked from her window through the windows of the parallel carriages. Most of the blinds were down, but occasionally the occupants of the carriages were visible. The other train was not very full and there were many empty carriages.
At the moment when the two trains gave the illusion of being stationary, a blind in one of the carriages flew up with a snap. Mrs. McGill looked into the lighted first-class carriage that was only a few feet away.
Then she drew her breath in, watching. Standing with his back to the window and to her was a man. His hands were round the throat of a woman who faced him, and he was slowly strangling her. Her eyes were staring from their sockets and her face was purple. As Mrs. McGill watched, fascinated, the end came; the body went limp and fell in the man’s hands.
At the same moment, Mrs. McGill’s train slowed down again and the other began to gain speed. It passed forward and a moment or two later it had vanished from sight. Almost automatically Mrs. McGill's hands went up to the communication cord and then paused. After all, what use would it be ringing the cord of the train in which she was traveling? The horror of what she had seen at such a close distance, and the unusual circumstances, made her feel numb. Some immediate action was necessary―but what?
The door of her compartment was drawn back and a ticket collector said, “Ticket, please.”

Passage 2
Scientists are racing to build the world’s first thinking robot. This is not science fiction: some say they will have made it by the year 2020.
Machines that walk, speak and feel are no longer science fiction. Kismet is the name of an android (機(jī)器人) which scientists have built at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Kismet is different from the traditional robot because it can show human emotions. Its eyes, ears and lips move to show when it feels happy, sad or bored. Kismet is one of the first of a new generation of androids―robots that look like human beings―which can imitate human feelings. Cog, another android invented by the MIT, imitates the action of a mother. However, scientists admit that so far Cog has the mental ability of a two-year-old.
The optimists say that by the year 2020 we will have created humanoids (機(jī)器人) with brains similar to those of an adult human being. These robots will be designed to look like people to make them more attractive and easier to sell to the public. What kind of jobs will they do? In the future, robots like Robonaut, a humanoid invented by NASA, will be doing dangerous jobs, like repairing space stations. They will also be doing more and more of the household work for us. In Japan, scientists are designing androids that will entertain us by dancing and playing the piano.
Some people worry about what the future holds: will robots become monsters ? Will people themselves become increasingly like robots? Experts predict that more and more people will be wearing micro-computers, connected to the internet,in the future. People will have micro-chips in various parts of their body, which will connect them to a wide variety of devices. Perhaps we should not exaggerate the importance of technology, but one wonders whether, in years to come, we will still be falling in love, and whether we will still feel pain. Who knows?
36. Kismet is different from traditional robots because it ________________.
A. can think for itself B. has eyes, ears and lips
C. can look after two-year-olds D. can express human feelings
37. A common feature of the new generation of robots mentioned in the passage is that they _______.
A. can act like a mother B. have the mental ability of a two-year-old

A. It’s possible to plant micro-chips in human bodies.
B. Human beings will do less household work because of robots.
C. No one is completely sure what technology will do for us in the future.
D. Robots with human brains will surely be created by 2020.
39. According to the passage, future robots will be designed to do all the following except .
